I don’t know about you but up here in the north of England we don’t really seem to have had a brilliant summer. Better than our partners over on the continent who have endured some awful hailstorms that have devastated their crops. In Pouilly Fuisse, where they also had to contend with a frost earlier on, they have only had about 20% of a normal sized crop so, in truth there is little or no wine to be had for the next couple of years.
Severe frosts in northern and central Italy also have caused a potential shortage of some wine for next year with vineyards in Chianti, Montepulciano and Barolo being affected as well as in the Veneto where the main production of Pinot Grigio originates.
So maybe we did ok after all. But as the bad weather has been for most European vineyard regions, we’d be tempted, money and space willing, to top up on some of your favourite wines before the certain price increases come.
