It is a common misconception that you should always drink red wine with cheese. In fact, the flavour and richness of many cheeses can overwhelm most red wines. There are some unfailingly great red wine and cheese pairings, for example Amarone with aged Parmesan and Stilton with Port, but reds that go well with cheese are usually softer, fruitier styles without too much oak influence.
More often than not, it is a white wine that will make a great match with cheese because white wines are more adaptable and complement a wider range of cheeses. Here are some of our favourites:
Stilton with sweet Sauternes, Tokaji or even a demi-sec Champagne.
Pungent Munster or Époisses with an Alsace Gewurztraminer.
Mature Cheddar with an oaked Chardonnay.
Soft cheeses and/or goat’s cheese with Sauvignon Blanc, Albarino or one of England’s better crisp, fresh, white wines such as our Lyme Bay Shoreline.
Broaden your horizon and give it try, we promise you'll love it!
