As is the case with all of the region's \u003cem\u003egrands crus\u003c\/em\u003e, the site has its own specific appellation, created in 1939, which is entirely distinct from the communal appellation of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/france\/burgundy+chassagne-montrachet\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Chassagne-Montrachet\"\u003eChassagne-Montrachet\u003c\/a\u003e – the village in which Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is located.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCriots-Bâtard-Montrachet wines are dry whites made exclusively from \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/chardonnay\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Chardonnay\"\u003eChardonnay\u003c\/a\u003e grapes grown within the carefully demarcated limits of the Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet site. They are among the most highly regarded wines in the world – a fact exaggerated by their scarcity. With just four acres (1.6ha) of vines to draw on, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is one of the smallest appellations in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/france\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"France\"\u003eFrance\u003c\/a\u003e, producing only a small quantity of its rare wine every vintage.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe south-east-facing Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet site is located at the foot of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/france\/burgundy+cote-dor\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Côte d'Or\"\u003eCôte d'Or\u003c\/a\u003e slopes at an altitude of around 780ft (240m) – a little lower than its neighbours \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/france\/burgundy+chevalier-montrachet-grand-cru\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru\"\u003eChevalier-Montrachet\u003c\/a\u003e and Le Montrachet. Consequently, the brown limestone soils here are slightly deeper than further up the slopes and have a higher proportion of clay.
