They are permitted to state the words \u003cem\u003epremier cru\u003c\/em\u003e on their labels and to append their official \u003cem\u003eclimat\u003c\/em\u003e name to that of the commune in the appellation title.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePernand-Vergelesses itself is a commune at the northern end of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/france\/burgundy+cote-de-beaune\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Côte de Beaune\"\u003eCôte de Beaune\u003c\/a\u003e district in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/france\/burgundy\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Burgundy\"\u003eBurgundy\u003c\/a\u003e. It has had its own Pernand-Vergelesses appellation since December 1936 and produces both red and white wines – from \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/pinot-noir\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Pinot Noir\"\u003ePinot Noir\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/chardonnay\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Chardonnay\"\u003eChardonnay\u003c\/a\u003e grapes respectively.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe commune underwent its vineyard classification in September 2001 – much more recently than its neighbouring communes, most of which were classified in the mid-1980s. Just under half of the land covered by the appellation was rated as \u003cem\u003epremier cru\u003c\/em\u003e, divided into eight \u003cem\u003eclimats\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe red wines of Pernand-Vergelesses are not as highly regarded as its whites, which might seem odd given its location immediately next to the red wine \u003cem\u003egrand cru\u003c\/em\u003e stronghold of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/france\/burgundy+corton-grand-cru\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Corton Grand Cru\"\u003eCorton\u003c\/a\u003e. The answer is simply that Pernand is located on the western side of the Corton hill, immediately below the white wine \u003cem\u003egrand cru\u003c\/em\u003e of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/france\/burgundy+corton-charlemagne-grand-cru\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru\"\u003eCorton-Charlemagne\u003c\/a\u003e. On this side of the hill, the \u003cem\u003eterroir\u003c\/em\u003e is quite obviously better suited to Chardonnay, producing flinty, austere wines which develop famously well with age. In fact, the \u003cem\u003epremier cru\u003c\/em\u003e vineyards in this immediate area, on the Corton slopes, hold the classification exclusively for their white wines.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe \u003cem\u003epremier cru\u003c\/em\u003e vineyards of Pernand-Vergelesses are divided quite neatly into two sections: to the east of the village and to the south, where they flow into the plains east of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrardseel.co.uk\/collections\/france\/burgundy+beaune\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Beaune\"\u003eBeaune\u003c\/a\u003e.
