This sweet, velvety dessert wine hails from Refrontolo in Italy’s Veneto and is made entirely from Marzemino grapes. Rich and indulgent, it offers ripe blackberry and loganberry flavours, hints of cherry, and a dark, chocolatey finish. With plenty of sweetness balanced by lively acidity, it pairs beautifully with berry puddings like summer pudding or, even better, dark chocolate desserts.
This 2022 vintage is drinking beautifully now, with primary fruit flavours well-integrated with the wine's natural sweetness and structure. Over the next 3-4 years, expect the dark chocolate elements to become more pronounced whilst the berry fruit develops greater complexity. The wine should maintain its appeal until around 2035, though the vibrant acidity may soften gradually after 2030.
Tasting Notes
AppearanceDeep garnet with purple highlights, displaying the concentrated colour typical of passito wines.
NoseRich aromas of dried blackberries and figs emerge first, followed by fresh cherry and subtle spice. The passito process has concentrated these fruit characters whilst adding layers of complexity including dark chocolate and a touch of liquorice.
PalateVelvety texture with intense blackberry and loganberry flavours that fill the mouth. The natural acidity of Marzemino provides excellent balance to the concentrated sweetness, preventing any cloying sensation. Dark chocolate and cherry pit tannins add structure and depth.
FinishLong and chocolatey with lingering berry fruit and a pleasant bitter-sweet balance.
Overall impressionA sophisticated dessert wine that showcases Marzemino's unique character through careful passito production.
Food Pairings
In the Veneto, Refrontolo Passito is traditionally served with local desserts like tiramisù or panna cotta, where its berry flavours complement creamy textures beautifully. Locals also pair it with aged Asiago cheese, creating a classic sweet-savoury combination that highlights both products. During winter months, it's often enjoyed alongside roasted chestnuts or the region's famous zaletti biscuits made with cornmeal and raisins.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve slightly chilled at 12-14°C to maintain freshness whilst allowing the complex aromatics to develop fully. No decanting is required given the wine's smooth texture and integrated tannins. Use smaller dessert wine glasses to concentrate the aromatics and manage the portion size appropriately for its richness.
The vineyards around Refrontolo benefit from a continental climate moderated by the nearby Piave River and the sheltering Alps to the north. The calcareous clay soils with good drainage provide ideal conditions for Marzemino, allowing the grapes to reach optimal ripeness before the passito drying process. This terroir combination produces grapes with concentrated flavours and natural acidity that balances the wine's inherent sweetness.
Refrontolo Passito DOCG is a relatively small denomination in the Veneto region, dedicated exclusively to sweet wines made from dried Marzemino grapes. The regulations require a minimum 15% alcohol and specific drying periods that concentrate the grape's natural sugars and flavours. This appellation represents one of Italy's most distinctive expressions of Marzemino, setting it apart from the variety's more common dry incarnations found in Trentino-Alto Adige.
The 2022 growing season in Veneto brought considerable challenges, with extreme heat and prolonged drought testing even experienced growers. Summer temperatures soared well above average, whilst rainfall remained scarce through the crucial ripening months. Many producers implemented careful canopy management and adjusted harvest timing to preserve freshness, with picking often beginning earlier than usual to maintain acidity levels. The lack of rain concentrated flavours but also reduced yields across the region, from the Prosecco hills of Valdobbiadene to the Amarone vineyards of Valpolicella.
Despite the demanding conditions, 2022 produced wines of surprising quality and character. Glera for Prosecco retained good aromatics and brightness where growers managed the heat stress effectively, though volumes were down. The red varieties fared particularly well - Corvina and Rondinella developed excellent concentration for future Amarone, whilst maintaining the structure needed for long ageing. Pinot Grigio and Soave's Garganega showed more weight than typical, with ripe fruit flavours balanced by mineral undertones. The Proseccos are drinking beautifully now, whilst the reds destined for Amarone production will need their traditional extended drying and ageing process.
FAQs
What makes this a passito wine?
Passito wines are made from grapes that are dried after harvest, either on mats or hung in well-ventilated rooms. This concentrates the sugars and flavours, creating naturally sweet wines with greater intensity and complexity than regular dessert wines.
How sweet is this wine compared to Port or Sauternes?
Refrontolo Passito is moderately sweet, less intense than Port but with more body than most Moscatos. The natural acidity of Marzemino provides excellent balance, making it less cloying than many dessert wines.
What's the ideal serving size?
Given its richness and 50cl bottle size, plan for 6-8 servings of approximately 60-75ml each. This allows guests to appreciate the wine's complexity without overwhelming the palate.
Can I cellar this wine?
Yes, quality passito wines age well due to their concentrated structure and natural acidity. This 2022 will drink beautifully until 2035, developing greater complexity over the next few years whilst maintaining its fruit character.
What food pairings work beyond dessert?
Try it with blue cheese like Gorgonzola or aged hard cheeses. The wine's berry flavours also complement pâtés and charcuterie, particularly those with fruit elements like fig or cherry accompaniments.
Is Marzemino only grown in Italy?
Marzemino is primarily an Italian grape variety, most famously grown in Trentino-Alto Adige and parts of Veneto. While small plantings exist elsewhere, Italy remains its spiritual home, particularly for high-quality expressions like this passito style.
