Real depth on the nose, which is attractively glossy (for the vintage) with a complex melange of polished but fresh blue, red and black fruits alongside currants, cocoa and resin. Tobacco and sandalwood contribute cigar box aromas, with walnuts, white pepper and pencil shavings also coming in to play, and competing sweet and savoury notes of kirsch, coconut, black truffle and dark soil. The palate is less showy than the nose but supple and bright with soft berry fruits and dark chocolate, bordered by rounded, graceful tannins and shot through with a spicy vein of red grapefruit acidity. Balanced and classy, this really offers everything you might hope to find in a claret double the price."
