Liqueur de Poire Williams is a vibrant, fruit-forward pear liqueur made from the famously aromatic Williams pears - like biting into a perfectly ripe pear, but with a little extra warmth.
Enjoy it chilled on its own, drizzled over desserts (it’s divine with vanilla ice cream), or mixed into cocktails for a fruity twist. For something extra special, try it with a splash of Champagne for a refreshing pear spritz.
A family-run domaine managed by Jacques, Laura and their daughter Carolyn, Sipp Mack's vineyards cover roughly 22 hectares near the enchanting villages of Hunawihr, Ribeauvillé and Bergheim. With over 300 years of Alsatian winemaking experience, they possess exceptional know-how of the regions grape varieties, which deliciously shines through in every bottle they produce.
This liqueur is designed for immediate enjoyment and will maintain its peak character for several years when properly stored. The fresh pear aromatics will remain vibrant for the first five years, gradually becoming more honeyed and less bright over time. Unlike wine, the flavour profile will not develop complexity through bottle age but rather maintain its pure fruit character before slowly declining. Best consumed within 8-10 years of production to enjoy the full intensity of the Williams pear expression.
Tasting Notes
AppearanceBrilliant golden yellow with excellent clarity and a slight viscous quality that coats the glass.
NoseImmediate and intense Williams pear aromatics dominate, offering the distinctive musky-floral character of perfectly ripe fruit. Fresh pear juice mingles with subtle honeyed sweetness and delicate white flower petals. The alcohol is well-integrated, adding warmth without overwhelming the fruit expression.
PalateRich and syrupy texture delivers concentrated pear flavours that mirror the nose perfectly. The sweetness is balanced by natural fruit acidity, preventing cloying while maintaining the liqueur's dessert-like character. Clean alcohol provides structure and warmth, with the pear essence remaining pure and authentic throughout.
FinishLong and warming with persistent pear flavours that gradually fade to leave a clean, slightly honeyed aftertaste.
Overall impressionA textbook Williams pear liqueur that captures the variety's distinctive character with remarkable fidelity and balance.
Food Pairings
In Alsace, pear liqueurs are traditionally enjoyed as digestifs after hearty meals featuring local specialities like choucroute garnie or baeckeoffe. The liqueur pairs beautifully with regional desserts such as tarte aux poires or kouglof, where the pear flavours complement rather than compete. Alsatians often serve it alongside Munster cheese and walnuts, creating a classic combination of sweet, savoury and nutty flavours. During winter months, it's commonly added to hot chocolate or served with spiced biscuits during Christmas markets.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C in small liqueur glasses to concentrate the aromatics and prevent the alcohol from becoming overpowering. No decanting required, but ensure the bottle is stored upright to maintain clarity. Traditional balloon-shaped liqueur glasses work best, allowing the pear aromatics to develop while controlling portion size. Can also be served over ice as a digestif or used as a cocktail ingredient when mixed with sparkling wine or spirits.
The Williams pears used for this liqueur are grown in the favourable climate of Alsace, where the Vosges Mountains provide shelter and the Rhine Valley creates ideal conditions for fruit cultivation. The region's limestone-clay soils and continental climate with warm summers allow the pears to develop exceptional aromatic intensity. The terroir's influence on fruit quality is as important here as it is for the family's wines, with the same attention paid to harvest timing and fruit selection.
Alsace operates under strict AOC regulations not just for wine but also for traditional fruit spirits and liqueurs. The region has a long tradition of fruit distillation, with eau-de-vie and liqueurs considered an integral part of Alsatian culture. Williams pear liqueur represents one of the classic expressions of this tradition, requiring specific fruit varieties and production methods. The appellation ensures authenticity and quality standards that have been maintained for generations.
FAQs
How should I serve this pear liqueur?
Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C in small liqueur glasses. It's excellent as a digestif after dinner, drizzled over vanilla ice cream, or mixed with Champagne for a pear spritz. The key is serving it cold to balance the sweetness and highlight the fresh pear aromatics.
What makes Williams pears special for liqueur production?
Williams pears have an intensely aromatic, musky-floral character that's instantly recognisable and perfect for distillation. They're harvested at perfect ripeness when the aromatics are most concentrated, then macerated to extract maximum flavour before the liqueur is carefully balanced with sugar and alcohol.
How long will this keep once opened?
The liqueur will maintain its quality for 2-3 years once opened if stored properly with the cap tightly sealed in a cool, dark place. The high alcohol content preserves the liquid, though the fresh pear aromatics may gradually diminish over extended periods.
Can I use this in cocktails?
Absolutely. It's excellent in cocktails, particularly mixed with sparkling wine for a pear spritz, or combined with gin and lemon juice for a pear sour. Start with small quantities as the pear flavour is quite intense and can easily dominate more delicate spirits.
What food pairs well with pear liqueur?
Classic pairings include vanilla ice cream, dark chocolate desserts, blue cheese, and pear-based desserts. It also works beautifully with nuts, particularly walnuts, and can complement rich pâtés or foie gras as a sweet contrast.
Is this suitable for cooking and baking?
Yes, it's excellent for culinary use. Add it to fruit salads, use in pear tarts or poach pears in it. The alcohol will cook off while leaving intense pear flavour, making it perfect for dessert sauces or to deglaze pans when cooking pork or duck.
