Founded in 2003 by Miguel Antonio Esteban and Asuncíon Martín, this 400-hectare winery located in the foothills of the Sierra de Algairen mountains is renowned for producing wines of great character and flavour thanks to the Cariñena Protected Designation of Origin's rocky terrain.
This wine is designed for immediate enjoyment and will show best within the first two years of release. The primary citrus and stone fruit flavours will remain prominent through 2027, supported by the wine's natural acidity and mineral structure. By 2028, the fruit may begin to fade whilst developing subtle honey characteristics, though the wine will remain perfectly drinkable. Beyond this point, the wine will lose its distinctive freshness and youthful vibrancy that defines the style.

Food Pairings
In Aragón, this style of white wine traditionally accompanies the region's famous jamón de Teruel and other cured meats served as tapas. Local cooks pair it with migas aragonesas, the hearty breadcrumb dish often topped with chorizo and fried eggs, where the wine's acidity cuts through the richness. Seafood dishes featuring salt cod or the region's river trout benefit from the wine's mineral backbone, whilst it also complements vegetable-based dishes like pisto aragonés and grilled asparagus with romesco sauce. The wine's freshness makes it ideal with local sheep's cheeses from the Pyrenees foothills.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C to preserve the wine's crisp acidity and mineral character. No decanting required - pour directly from the bottle into medium-sized white wine glasses to concentrate the delicate aromatics. Open just before serving as this style is best enjoyed immediately whilst the fruit flavours remain vibrant and the CO2 from fermentation still provides a subtle lift.
The vineyards sit in the foothills of the Sierra de Algairen mountains at altitudes between 400-800 metres, where Continental influences create significant diurnal temperature variation. The rocky, limestone-rich soils with iron deposits provide excellent drainage whilst retaining enough moisture for the vines during Aragón's hot, dry summers. These harsh growing conditions stress the vines, concentrating flavours and creating wines with distinctive mineral backbone and bright acidity.
Cariñena, Spain's oldest designated wine region established in 1932, covers 14,000 hectares of high-altitude vineyards in Aragón. The DO mandates minimum alcohol levels and yields whilst encouraging both traditional varieties like Garnacha and international grapes. Cariñena's Continental climate and rocky soils produce more structured, mineral-driven wines than neighbouring Somontano, with greater diurnal temperature variation preserving freshness. The region's harsh growing conditions naturally limit yields, creating concentrated wines with distinctive character.
The 2022 growing season in Aragón brought a mix of challenges that ultimately favoured quality over quantity. Spring arrived early with warm conditions, though frost concerns materialised in some vineyard sites during late March. Summer heat was intense and prolonged, with drought conditions putting stress on vines across the region's diverse terrain. However, this water stress proved beneficial for concentration in many cases, particularly in higher altitude vineyards where diurnal temperature variation helped preserve acidity. Harvest began earlier than usual, with careful timing essential to capture optimal ripeness before excessive heat could compromise freshness.
The vintage produced wines of notable concentration and structure, though yields were reduced. Garnacha performed exceptionally well, thriving in the hot, dry conditions that suit this indigenous variety perfectly. The grape retained its characteristic bright fruit whilst developing impressive depth and complexity. Tempranillo showed more variable results depending on site selection and vineyard management, with the best examples displaying excellent colour and tannin structure. Most 2022 Aragón wines are approachable now but will reward cellaring, with the finest examples likely to develop beautifully over the next 8-12 years. This is a vintage that captures the essence of Aragón's continental climate at its most expressive.
FAQs
What grape varieties are used in this Esteban Martín white wine?
