A complex blend with layers of dark fruit, chocolate, and spice. Shed 530 Estate’s Reserve combines Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon for a rich, balanced wine.
Currently drinking well but has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 5-8 years. The primary fruit will gradually integrate with the oak, developing secondary characteristics of leather, tobacco, and forest floor. Peak drinking is likely between 2028-2032, after which the wine will hold well but begin to show more tertiary development. The tannin structure suggests this wine will age gracefully, though it won't require extended cellaring to reach its potential.
What the critics say:
"Finally, the 2020 Shed 530 Estate Reserve Merlot/Malbec/Cabernet, also from the Gimblett Gravels, the soil and climate of which is about as close to Bordeaux as you can get. A roughly equal blend of the three named varieties, it spent 18 months in oak and is deliciously complex with hints of cassis one moment, mushrooms and truffles the next and even loganberries and mulberries. With a long, satisfying finish it’s more than ready to drink although still has room to improve. I loved it."
Tasting Notes
AppearanceDeep garnet with purple highlights, displaying good concentration and youth.
NoseBlackcurrant and dark plum emerge first, followed by earthy mushroom and truffle aromatics. Oak integration is evident with vanilla and spice, while subtle berry compote adds complexity.
PalateRich and structured with layers of dark fruit, chocolate, and warming spice. The Malbec contributes density and colour, while Merlot provides plushness and the Cabernet Sauvignon adds backbone and tannin structure. Eighteen months in oak has added texture without overwhelming the fruit.
FinishLong and satisfying with lingering dark fruit and savoury undertones.
Overall impressionA well-crafted Bordeaux-style blend that demonstrates the potential of Gimblett Gravels terroir.
Food Pairings
In Hawke's Bay, this style of wine traditionally accompanies locally sourced lamb, particularly the region's grass-fed spring lamb prepared with fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme. The area's proximity to the coast means seafood also features, with grilled snapper or crayfish complementing the wine's structure. Local venison from the nearby ranges pairs excellently, often prepared with native horopito pepper and kumara. The wine also suits the region's artisanal cheeses, particularly aged hard varieties from local producers.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve at 16-18°C to allow the full complexity to emerge. Decant for 30-45 minutes to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics, though this can be enjoyed immediately if preferred. Use large Bordeaux-style glasses to concentrate the aromatics and provide adequate surface area for the wine to breathe.
The Gimblett Gravels is a former riverbed composed of free-draining gravel soils that retain heat and reflect it back to the vines, creating ideal ripening conditions. This unique terroir, combined with Hawke's Bay's warm, dry climate and long growing season, produces wines with concentrated fruit flavours and natural structure. The gravel soils stress the vines beneficially, forcing deep root systems that access mineral-rich subsoils, contributing to the wine's complexity and longevity.
Gimblett Gravels is a sub-region within Hawke's Bay, New Zealand's premium red wine district. The area is recognised for producing some of the country's finest Bordeaux-style blends, with strict regulations governing vineyard practices and grape varieties. The terroir here is often compared to Left Bank Bordeaux, with its gravelly soils and maritime climate creating ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec. Unlike many New Zealand regions known for Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir, Gimblett Gravels has established itself as the country's answer to Bordeaux.
The 2020 growing season in Hawke's Bay began promisingly with a warm, settled summer that allowed steady ripening across the region's diverse terroirs. However, the vintage will be remembered for the challenges that followed: significant rainfall in March disrupted harvest plans, forcing producers to make careful selection decisions. The weather pattern created a tale of two harvests - those who picked early secured excellent fruit, while others faced dilution and disease pressure. Despite these hurdles, experienced growers who adapted quickly to the conditions managed to produce wines of real character.
The 2020 vintage produced wines with appealing freshness and moderate alcohol levels, particularly benefiting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which retained excellent natural acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the best sites show good concentration, though overall yields were reduced. While 2020 may not rank among Hawke's Bay's legendary vintages, the wines display an elegant, food-friendly style with pure fruit expression. The whites are drinking beautifully now and will continue to develop over the next three to five years, whilst the reds are approachable young but will reward cellaring through the late 2020s.
FAQs
What makes Gimblett Gravels special for red wine production?
The Gimblett Gravels is a former riverbed with unique heat-retaining gravel soils that create ideal conditions for ripening Bordeaux varieties. The terroir is often compared to the Left Bank of Bordeaux, producing wines with exceptional structure and longevity that are distinctly New Zealand in character.
How does this blend compare to Bordeaux wines?
While the grape varieties are the same as those used in Bordeaux, the New Zealand expression tends to be more fruit-forward with riper tannins. The climate allows for more consistent ripening, resulting in wines that are approachable earlier but still possess the structure for ageing.
What food would you recommend with this wine?
This wine excels with red meat preparations, particularly lamb, beef, and venison. The structure and tannins make it ideal for grilled or roasted meats, while the complexity pairs beautifully with game dishes and aged hard cheeses.
Should I decant this wine?
While enjoyable immediately, decanting for 30-45 minutes will enhance the experience by softening the tannins and opening up the aromatics. The wine benefits from breathing, particularly if consumed within the next few years.
How long will this wine keep?
This 2020 vintage will drink well until 2035, with peak enjoyment likely between 2028-2032. The wine has the structure to age gracefully, developing more complex secondary and tertiary characteristics over time.
