Muscardin is a relatively obscure red wine grape variety from the southern end of the
Rhône Valley in
France. Although it is one of the 18 varieties permitted in the famed
Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, Muscardin is rarely (if ever) used to produce varietal wines.
While Muscardin lacks depth of colour, it provides a pleasing floral lift to blended wines and is therefore ideal as an ingredient alongside
Grenache,
Syrah and
Mourvèdre – the stalwart grape varieties of southern Rhône wines.
