Terra De Asorei crafts this Selección Privada from old Albariño vines grown close to the Galician coast, in the heart of Rías Baixas. The wine shows the variety's hallmark combination of ripe stone fruit and taut acidity, given extra weight and texture through a period of lees contact that softens the edges without dulling the freshness.
This is Albariño with more substance than most everyday examples, better suited to the table than the terrace.
Terra De Asorei is a small, quality-focused estate in the Val do Salnés subzone of Rías Baixas, one of the most prized corners of this DO for Albariño. The Selección Privada represents the top tier of their range, drawn from their oldest and most carefully tended parcels. Their approach is unhurried and vineyard-led, with a clear belief that Albariño is capable of more than the crisp, easy-drinking image the variety sometimes carries.
In its first year or two the wine shows vivid primary fruit, all citrus and stone fruit, with the lees character still in the background. By 2027 and 2028 that textural element becomes more pronounced, adding a creamy, savoury dimension that balances the acidity.
Tasting Notes
AppearancePale lemon-gold with a bright, youthful rim.
NoseWhite peach and lemon zest sit alongside a distinct sea-breeze salinity. A touch of wet stone and white flowers adds lift, with the lees ageing contributing a subtle creamy undertone beneath the fruit.
PalateJuicy stone fruit and citrus pith are carried by a firm, saline backbone. The texture is rounder than typical Albariño, a result of lees contact, yet the acidity keeps everything taut and precise.
FinishLong and savoury, with a lingering mineral tang and a final flicker of citrus.
Overall impressionA serious, textured Albariño that trades simple freshness for genuine depth.
Food Pairings
In O Salnés, Albariño is the natural partner to the region's extraordinary seafood, poured alongside steamed percebes, navajas and freshly caught turbot. Locals reach for it with pulpo a feira, octopus dressed in paprika and olive oil, and with the region's empanadas filled with tuna or cockles. The wine's salinity and acid grip are built for shellfish, and it is rarely drunk without something from the sea on the table.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve chilled, around 10 to 12°C, to preserve the wine's freshness and salinity. No decanting is necessary, though 15 minutes in the glass allows the lees-derived texture to open up. A tulip-shaped white wine glass concentrates the aromatics without losing the mineral edge.
The vineyards sit in O Salnés, the coolest and wettest of the Rías Baixas sub-zones, where Atlantic influence is constant and vines are trained high on granite pergolas to encourage air flow and reduce rot. Soils are predominantly granitic and sandy, free-draining and low in fertility, which keeps yields naturally modest and concentrates flavour. Proximity to the sea brings a persistent salinity to the fruit and a cooling diurnal swing that preserves acidity through ripening.
Rías Baixas DO, in Galicia's far north-west corner, is Spain's benchmark region for Albariño and one of the country's few white-dominant appellations. Regulations require a minimum of Albariño in the blend (frequently 100 per cent, as here) and the region is divided into five sub-zones, of which O Salnés is the most historic and maritime in character. Compared to the slightly warmer, more inland sub-zones such as Condado do Tea, O Salnés wines tend to show greater salinity and a leaner, more cutting acidity.
2022 was a warm, dry year in Rías Baixas, part of a broader Iberian pattern of low rainfall and higher-than-average temperatures through the growing season. The region's proximity to the Atlantic offered some relief from the worst of the summer heat that affected inland Spain, but growers still saw smaller berries and lower yields than usual, with some sites bringing in fruit earlier than the typical late September or October picking dates. Albariño, which dominates these vineyards, responded well to the sunshine, ripening fully while retaining the acidity that gives the wines their characteristic lift.
Quality across the region is good, with wines showing riper stone fruit and citrus character than in cooler years, alongside a slightly fuller texture. The best examples balance this ripeness with the saline, mineral edge that marks out top Rías Baixas Albariño, particularly from vineyards closer to the coast in Salnés. These are not wines built for extended cellaring. Most 2022s are drinking well now and will continue to show nicely over the next two to three years, though they lack the austere, age-worthy structure of the finest Rías Baixas vintages. Drink while fresh.
FAQs
What food should I pair with this Albariño?
Shellfish is the classic match, particularly oysters, prawns, scallops and grilled fish. It also works well with lighter poultry dishes and dishes built around lemon and herbs.
How long will this wine keep?
It is best enjoyed between 2026 and 2029. Albariño is not generally built for long-term cellaring, and this wine is at its best while the acidity remains vivid.
Should I decant it?
No decanting is required, though allowing it a few minutes in the glass after pouring lets the aromatics develop.
What makes Selección Privada different from standard Albariño?
This cuvée comes from a selection of the estate's best old-vine plots and spends extended time on its lees, giving it more texture and depth than an entry-level Albariño.
What is O Salnés and why does it matter?
O Salnés is the coolest, most maritime sub-zone of Rías Baixas and the historic heartland of Albariño. Its granite soils and Atlantic influence give the wines their characteristic salinity and precision.
What serving temperature is ideal?
Serve well chilled, around 10 to 12°C, to keep the wine's freshness and minerality in focus.
