The 2019 Barbera del Monferrato is a vibrant and expressive red, showing the lively character of Barbera without excessive oak influence. In the glass, it reveals a deep ruby hue with a youthful brightness. Aromatically, it opens with juicy red cherry, ripe raspberry, and crushed violets, supported by a touch of earth, spice, and a faint herbal note. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a refreshing acidity—a hallmark of Barbera—that brings lift and clarity.

Flavours of sour cherry, plum, and pomegranate are framed by soft tannins and a hint of black pepper and anise. The finish is clean and zesty, making it a versatile food wine, ideal with charcuterie, tomato-based pastas, or grilled sausages.

Villa Sparina was founded by the Moccagatta family in the 1970's in the hamlet of Monterotondo. It comprises of 100 hectares of land, 70 of which are cultivated with local grapes for the production of Gavi and Barbera wine.

Villa Sparina's dedication to quality has not gone unnoticed, as they have received numerous accolades, including the prestigious "European Winery of the Year" award at the Wine Star Awards by Wine Enthusiast. This is an estate that should be on everyone’s radar.

What the critics say:

92/100James Suckling

"Tightly packed aromas and flavors of amarena cherries, minerals and citrus. Hints of Cuban tobacco. Medium-bodied and very flavorful with exquisite balance. I really like the spicy, tobacco, oaky note at the end. This can age. Drink or hold."
