Château de la Gardine produces classical Châteauneuf-du-Pape from their 52-hectare estate, combining traditional winemaking with modern precision. This 2022 vintage delivers the generous fruit and Mediterranean warmth that defines the appellation, with Grenache providing the backbone of ripe berry flavours, while Syrah and Mourvèdre add structure and spice.
Four years on, the wine has developed beautiful integration between fruit and oak, showing the garrigue herbs and sun-baked earth character that makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape distinctive. Drinking beautifully now, it will continue to evolve gracefully until 2038, making it an excellent choice for both immediate enjoyment and medium-term cellaring.
Currently in an excellent drinking phase, showing integrated fruit and developing secondary complexity. Over the next 5-7 years, the primary berry fruit will gradually give way to more savoury, earthy character, with leather, game and dried herb flavours becoming more prominent. The tannins will continue to soften, making the wine increasingly approachable, while the garrigue herbs will become more pronounced. The wine should reach its optimal complexity around 2030-2035, after which it will hold well for several more years before beginning a gradual decline. By 2038, the fruit may start to fade, though the wine will retain its distinctive terroir character.
Tasting Notes
AppearanceDeep ruby-garnet with purple highlights, showing excellent colour intensity for its age.
NoseRipe blackberry and cherry compote dominate initially, followed by Mediterranean herbs - thyme, rosemary and lavender. Subtle oak integration brings vanilla and spice, while underlying garrigue and leather add complexity. The warmth of the vintage shows through sun-baked earth aromas.
PalateFull-bodied with generous dark fruit - blackberry, plum and cherry - supported by well-integrated tannins that provide structure without overwhelming. Mid-palate richness gives way to herbal complexity, with black olive, dried herbs and a touch of black pepper. The oak is well-judged, adding texture rather than dominating the fruit.
FinishLong and warming, with persistent dark fruit and a gentle spice that echoes the Southern Rhône sun.
Overall impressionA classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape that balances power with elegance, showing excellent terroir expression and careful winemaking.
Food Pairings
In the Southern Rhône, this style of wine traditionally accompanies the robust cuisine of Provence - slow-braised beef daube cooked with local herbs and orange peel, grilled lamb with herbes de Provence, or wild boar stew. The locals also pair it with strong, aged cheeses from the region such as Picodon goat's cheese or aged Banon. Game dishes featuring duck, venison or rabbit, often cooked with local olives and tomatoes, complement the wine's earthy, herbal character perfectly. The wine's Mediterranean warmth also suits dishes featuring aubergine, peppers and courgettes - the vegetables that thrive in the same garrigue landscape that shapes the wine's flavour.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve at 16-18°C to allow the fruit and complexity to show fully. Decant 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the wine to open up and integrate - this vintage benefits from a little air to soften the tannins and reveal the herbal complexity. Use large Burgundy bowls rather than Bordeaux glasses to concentrate the generous aromatics. If drinking within the next few years, decanting is recommended; older bottles may benefit from gentler handling.
The vineyard sits on the famous galets roulés - large rounded stones that absorb heat during the day and release it at night, ensuring optimal ripening. Beneath these stones lies a mixture of red clay and limestone, providing excellent drainage whilst retaining enough moisture for the vines during the hot, dry summers. The Mediterranean climate, moderated by the Mistral wind, creates ideal conditions for Grenache and other Southern Rhône varieties. This terroir combination produces wines with concentrated fruit flavours and the distinctive herbal, garrigue character that defines Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, established in 1936, was France's first AOC and remains one of its most prestigious. The appellation permits thirteen grape varieties, though Grenache typically dominates red blends, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and others. Strict regulations govern everything from pruning methods to minimum alcohol levels (12.5%), ensuring quality remains high. The 3,200-hectare appellation produces wines with more power and concentration than neighbouring Côtes du Rhône appellations, yet typically shows more elegance than the northern Rhône's Syrah-based wines.
The 2022 Rhône vintage began with a dry winter followed by an exceptionally hot, drought-stricken summer that tested even the region's heat-loving varieties. Water stress became severe across both northern and southern appellations, with some producers reporting the earliest harvest dates on record. The extreme conditions favoured old-vine sites with deep root systems, whilst younger plantings struggled. Careful vineyard management and selective harvesting proved crucial, as grape concentration reached intense levels with naturally low yields.
Despite the challenging conditions, 2022 produced wines of remarkable intensity and structure. Syrah in the north shows exceptional depth and spice, though alcohol levels ran high. Grenache thrived in the southern Rhône, delivering powerful, concentrated reds with impressive colour saturation. The vintage favours producers who picked early to preserve freshness and employed judicious cellar techniques. These are structured wines built for the long term – the finest northern Rhônes will benefit from five to seven years of cellaring before showing their best, whilst the southern appellations are more approachable now but will reward patience through the 2030s.
FAQs
What makes this vintage particularly special?
The 2022 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape benefited from an excellent growing season with warm, dry conditions that concentrated the fruit whilst maintaining freshness. The harvest was earlier than usual but resulted in wines with excellent colour, structure and aromatic complexity.
How does this compare to other Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers?
Château de la Gardine represents excellent value within the appellation, offering classical Châteauneuf-du-Pape character at a more accessible price point than some of the most famous estates. The wine shows typical terroir expression with reliable quality year after year.
Is this wine ready to drink now or should I cellar it?
The wine is drinking beautifully now, four years after harvest, showing excellent integration and developing complexity. However, it will continue to improve until 2038, so both immediate consumption and cellaring are excellent options depending on your preference.
What's the ideal cellaring temperature for this wine?
Store at a constant 12-14°C with 70% humidity, away from light and vibration. Lay bottles on their side to keep the cork moist. A consistent temperature is more important than the exact degree - avoid fluctuations which can damage the wine over time.
Why is Châteauneuf-du-Pape considered a premium appellation?
Established as France's first AOC in 1936, Châteauneuf-du-Pape has strict quality regulations including low yields, manual harvesting requirements, and minimum alcohol levels. The unique terroir of galets roulés stones and Mediterranean climate creates ideal conditions for producing concentrated, age-worthy wines.
What food should I avoid pairing with this wine?
Avoid delicate fish dishes, very spicy food that would overwhelm the wine's complexity, or dishes with heavy cream sauces that might clash with the tannins. The wine's power and structure need equally robust flavours to create harmonious pairings.
