Indaba's 2024 Chenin Blanc captures the fresh, approachable style that has made South African Chenin Blanc so popular. From Western Cape vineyards, this wine balances bright acidity with subtle honeyed character typical of the variety.

The wine shows classic Chenin Blanc markers: green apple and citrus fruit with a hint of wet wool minerality. Best enjoyed young whilst the fruit remains vibrant, this makes an excellent weekday white or aperitif wine until 2028.

This wine is designed for immediate consumption whilst the primary fruit flavours remain vibrant. Over the next 12-18 months, the green apple and citrus character will remain prominent, though some tropical fruit may develop. By 2028, the wine will begin to lose its crisp edge and honeyed character may become more pronounced. Best enjoyed within two years of vintage for optimal freshness.

Tasting Notes

AppearancePale straw with bright clarity and slight green tinge around the rim.

NoseGreen apple and lime zest lead, followed by white flowers and a touch of honey. There's a subtle mineral note reminiscent of wet stones. The aromatics are clean and focused without excessive complexity.

PalateMedium-bodied with crisp acidity driving fresh citrus and green apple flavours. A hint of tropical fruit emerges mid-palate alongside subtle honeyed texture. The wine maintains good balance between fruit and acidity throughout.

FinishClean and refreshing with lingering citrus and mineral notes.

Overall impressionA well-made, straightforward Chenin Blanc that delivers varietal character at an accessible price point.

Food Pairings

In the Western Cape, Chenin Blanc traditionally accompanies the region's seafood-focused cuisine, particularly snoek (a local fish) prepared on the braai or in curries. The wine pairs excellently with bobotie, South Africa's national dish of spiced mince with egg custard topping. Local favourites include pairing it with waterblommetjie bredie (waterlily stew), fresh linefish like kingklip, and the abundant shellfish from False Bay. The wine's acidity also complements boerewors and sosaties from the braai when lighter fare is preferred.

FAQs

Is this wine suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

Most modern South African wines use minimal intervention winemaking, though specific fining agents should be confirmed with the producer. Chenin Blanc typically requires little processing, making it often suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.

How long will this wine keep once opened?

With proper storage in the refrigerator and a vacuum seal or inert gas, this wine should maintain its character for 3-4 days after opening. The crisp acidity helps preserve freshness longer than many white wines.

What makes South African Chenin Blanc distinctive?

South Africa has the world's largest plantings of Chenin Blanc, with old bush vines producing wines ranging from fresh and crisp to rich and complex. The variety thrives in the Western Cape's climate, developing good acidity whilst retaining fruit character.

Should I age this wine?

This style of Chenin Blanc is crafted for immediate enjoyment rather than cellaring. Drink within 2-3 years of vintage whilst the fresh fruit character remains at its peak.

What food should I avoid pairing with this wine?

Avoid heavily oaked dishes, very rich cream sauces, or strongly spiced foods that might overwhelm the wine's delicate character. Red meat and game are generally too robust for this style of Chenin Blanc.

Is this wine dry or off-dry?

This wine is crafted in a dry style with any residual sugar balanced by crisp acidity. The honeyed character comes from the Chenin Blanc grape variety rather than actual sweetness.
