Jamaica is a land of rainforest, mountains, clear cool waters, entrancing beaches filled with plenty of marvels; each corner conceals a treasure of the most natural of beauties. It is from this incredible and proud land that Kingsyaad Rum draws its unique characteristics.

The local molasses undergo a long, natural fermentation that can take up to 2 weeks, during which wild yeast of the island produce its distinct flavors and give rise to high esters content. Rum is then aged up to 8 years in the tropical climate of Jamaica, balancing its aromas. The quality of the process allows for a rich, complex and yet balanced Rum with no added sugars.

Kingsyaad is a very aromatic Rum with no sugars added. On the nose, Kingsyaad develops scents of coffee and cacao leaning towards bitter notes, tobacco and tropical fruits. Its heart, powerful and round, gifts flavors of cacao and coffee, developing into leather and sandal wood. The lushness of its body gives space to a long finish, not too heavy but rather fine and balanced, coming back to aromas of cherry and chocolate.

This eight-year-old rum has reached an ideal drinking window where the tropical maturation has integrated the aggressive ester character with oak complexity. Over the next decade, the coffee and chocolate flavours will continue to meld, potentially developing more honeyed sweetness and spice integration. The high-ester profile that defines authentic Jamaican rum will gradually soften, though it should retain its distinctive funky character for many years. Beyond fifteen years total age, the tropical climate's accelerated ageing may begin to favour wood tannins over the fruit and molasses character.

Tasting Notes

AppearanceDeep amber with golden highlights, reflecting its eight-year tropical maturation.

NoseCoffee and cocoa dominate initially, backed by tobacco leaf and tropical fruit aromas. The high-ester character from wild yeast fermentation creates a funky, almost medicinal quality that's characteristic of traditional Jamaican rum. Dried banana and overripe mango add sweetness without any artificial additions.

PalateRich and round with powerful cocoa and coffee flavours leading into leather and sandalwood. The tropical ageing has integrated the spirit beautifully with the wood, creating depth without overwhelming the molasses character. Spice builds gradually, with black pepper and cinnamon emerging mid-palate.

FinishLong and balanced, returning to cherry and dark chocolate with a fine, elegant conclusion that avoids heaviness despite the richness.

Overall impressionA sophisticated Jamaican rum that balances traditional high-ester character with refined ageing, delivering complexity without added sugar.

Food Pairings

In Jamaica, aged rum like Kingsyaad traditionally accompanies rich, spiced dishes that complement its robust character. Jerk chicken or pork, with their smoky heat and aromatic spice blends, create natural harmony with the rum's coffee and leather flavours. Traditional Jamaican Christmas cake, dense with dried fruits and spices, pairs beautifully with the rum's chocolate and cherry finish. Curried goat, a national favourite, finds balance with the rum's tropical fruit character and sandalwood complexity. The rum also accompanies roasted breadfruit and ackee dishes, where its earthy tobacco character enhances the local produce.

FAQs

What makes Jamaican rum different from other Caribbean rums?

Jamaican rum is distinguished by its high-ester profile, created through extended fermentation with wild yeasts that can take up to two weeks. This produces distinctive funky, medicinal aromas that are prized by rum enthusiasts. The tropical ageing climate also accelerates maturation compared to temperate regions.

Why is this rum sold in a 50cl bottle?

Premium aged rums are often bottled in 50cl format to reflect their status as sipping spirits rather than mixing rums. The smaller bottle size also helps preserve the rum's aromatic complexity once opened, as there's less air space and oxidation.

How should I store opened rum?

Unlike wine, rum doesn't deteriorate quickly once opened due to its higher alcohol content. Store upright in a cool, dark place away from temperature fluctuations. The rum will retain its quality for several years after opening, though the most volatile aromatics may fade slightly over time.

Can this rum be used in cocktails?

While Kingsyaad can be used in cocktails, its complexity and eight-year age make it better suited to neat sipping or very simple serves. If mixing, use classic rum cocktails like an Old Fashioned or Daiquiri where the rum's character can shine through without being masked.

What does 'no added sugar' mean for rum?

Many commercial rums add sugar or glycerin to smooth out harsh edges and create perceived richness. 'No added sugar' means Kingsyaad relies purely on the natural sweetness from molasses and barrel ageing, resulting in a drier, more authentic flavour profile that better expresses the raw materials and production methods.
