Maison Darragon's 2022 Vouvray Demi Sec from the Hautes de Ruettes vineyard demonstrates the versatility of Chenin Blanc in the Loire's most celebrated white wine appellation. This off-dry style strikes an elegant balance between residual sweetness and Chenin's characteristic acidity, creating a wine that pairs beautifully with both savoury and sweet dishes.

The 2022 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season that allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness whilst retaining freshness.

Currently showing primary fruit character with integrated acidity and sweetness, this 2022 will develop greater complexity over the next three to four years as the honey and mineral elements become more prominent. By 2028-2030, expect the wine to show classic Vouvray secondary characteristics including wet wool, lanolin, and deeper mineral notes whilst retaining its fresh fruit core. The wine should maintain its balance and drinkability until 2034, after which the fruit may begin to fade whilst the mineral elements dominate. Chenin Blanc's natural acidity will preserve the wine's structure throughout its drinking window.

Tasting Notes

AppearancePale gold with brilliant clarity and a slight green tinge around the rim.

NoseRipe pear and Golden Delicious apple aromas lead, followed by acacia honey and white flowers. Subtle mineral undertones emerge with aeration, alongside faint almonds and fresh herbs. The aromatics show typical Chenin Blanc character with appealing off-dry richness.

PalateMedium-bodied with excellent balance between residual sweetness and crisp acidity. Orchard fruit flavours dominate the mid-palate, supported by honey and lanolin textures. The limestone minerality provides structure and length, whilst keeping the sweetness in check. Clean and precise with no heaviness despite the demi sec style.

FinishLong and refreshing with lingering pear fruit and a subtle saline mineral echo.

Overall impressionA classic Vouvray demi sec that exemplifies Chenin Blanc's versatility and food-friendly character.

Food Pairings

In the Loire Valley, Vouvray demi sec traditionally accompanies the region's famous goat's cheeses, particularly Crottin de Chavignol and Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine, where the wine's acidity cuts through the cheese's richness whilst the residual sweetness complements its mineral tang. Local chefs pair it with rillettes de Tours, the area's celebrated potted pork, and freshwater fish like sandre (pike-perch) from the Loire, often prepared with beurre blanc sauce. The wine also accompanies tarte Tatin, invented nearby in the Orléanais, where the caramelised apples echo the wine's orchard fruit character. During autumn, it pairs beautifully with roasted chestnuts and game birds from the Sologne forests.

FAQs

What does demi sec mean and how sweet is this wine?

Demi sec means 'half-dry' in French and indicates a wine with noticeable but balanced sweetness. This Vouvray contains approximately 12-45 grams of residual sugar per litre, making it noticeably sweet but not dessert-wine level. The high acidity typical of Chenin Blanc keeps the sweetness refreshing rather than cloying.

How does this compare to other Vouvray styles?

Vouvray comes in four main styles: sec (dry), demi sec (off-dry), moelleux (sweet), and sparkling. This demi sec sits between the bone-dry sec and the dessert-wine moelleux, offering versatility with both savoury and sweet foods. It's more approachable than sec wines when young but less concentrated than moelleux.

Can I cellar this wine and for how long?

Yes, Chenin Blanc from Vouvray ages beautifully due to its natural acidity. This 2022 will drink well until 2034, developing more complex honey, mineral, and secondary characteristics over time. Store in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature around 12°C.

What food should I avoid pairing with this wine?

Avoid heavily spiced dishes, very salty foods, and red meat-based dishes which can clash with the wine's delicate fruit character. Very rich, creamy sauces may also overwhelm the wine's balance. The residual sweetness makes it unsuitable for pairing with already sweet dishes unless they're specifically dessert wines.

Is this wine suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

Most Loire Valley wines including Vouvray are suitable for vegetarians, but vegan suitability depends on fining agents used during production. Contact the producer directly for specific information about animal-derived products used in the winemaking process, as practices vary between producers.

What makes Vouvray special compared to other Chenin Blanc regions?

Vouvray's unique tuffeau limestone soils and continental climate with maritime influences create ideal conditions for Chenin Blanc, producing wines with exceptional minerality and aging potential. The region's centuries-old winemaking tradition and strict AOC regulations ensure consistent quality and authentic expression of this versatile grape variety.
