A Chenin Blanc of real style produced by Pierre Darragon with daughter Christelle. Light, delicate and charming with lots of crisp white fruit on the nose and a long, lemony finish.
The 2022 is drinking beautifully now with its primary fruit flavours still vibrant and fresh. Over the next two years, the wine will integrate further, developing subtle honeyed characteristics while maintaining its crisp backbone. The limestone minerality will become more pronounced, and by 2029-2030, expect the wine to show classic Vouvray petrol-like complexity. Beyond this point, the fresh fruit character will begin to fade.

AppearancePale gold with green reflections, bright and clear.
NoseFresh white peach and green apple lead, followed by lime zest and white flowers. A subtle chalky minerality emerges with air, along with fresh herbs.

Overall impressionA textbook example of dry Vouvray's elegance and mineral clarity.
Food Pairings
In the Loire Valley, dry Vouvray traditionally accompanies the region's famous goat's cheeses like Crottin de Chavignol, where the wine's acidity cuts through the cheese's tanginess. River fish such as pike-perch and salmon are classic pairings, often prepared simply with herbs from the local countryside. The wine also complements pork dishes, particularly rillons and rillettes, where its freshness balances the rich, fatty textures.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C in a medium-sized white wine glass to concentrate the delicate aromatics. No decanting required - the wine shows best when poured directly from the bottle. Allow it to warm slightly in the glass to reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Les Tuffes vineyard sits on the classic tuffeau limestone that defines Vouvray's best sites. This chalky, porous stone provides excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for the vines during dry spells. The limestone imparts the characteristic mineral backbone that gives structure and longevity to the wines.
Vouvray produces exclusively Chenin Blanc wines ranging from bone dry to lusciously sweet, with sparkling versions also permitted. The appellation's limestone soils and cool climate create wines with distinctive mineral tension and bright acidity. Vouvray's dry wines offer more restraint and elegance than many Loire Chenin Blancs, developing honeyed complexity with age.
The 2022 growing season in the Loire began promisingly with a warm, dry spring that encouraged early budbreak across the valley's vineyards. However, summer brought significant challenges with prolonged drought conditions and exceptional heat waves that tested vine resilience. Many producers implemented careful canopy management and reduced yields to protect fruit quality. The lack of rainfall concentrated flavours but required vigilant vineyard work to prevent excessive stress. Harvest commenced earlier than usual, with growers working swiftly to capture freshness before acidity levels dropped too dramatically.
Despite the challenging conditions, 2022 delivered wines of notable concentration and character across the Loire's diverse appellations. Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé shows excellent mineral tension with ripe stone fruit flavours, whilst Muscadet displays appealing richness without losing its characteristic salinity. Chenin Blanc from the middle Loire achieved impressive balance between power and elegance. The reds, particularly Cabernet Franc, benefited from the warm vintage, producing wines with deep colour and structured tannins. Most 2022 Loire whites are drinking beautifully now and will continue to develop over the next three to five years, while the reds will reward medium-term cellaring.
FAQs
What makes Vouvray different from other Loire Chenin Blancs?
Vouvray's tuffeau limestone soils create wines with distinctive mineral tension and restraint compared to the warmer, more fruit-forward styles found elsewhere in the Loire. The cool climate and chalky terroir produce Chenin Blancs with exceptional aging potential and characteristic honeyed complexity.
How long will this 2022 keep?
This dry Vouvray will drink well until around 2030, with peak drinking likely between now and 2028. The limestone terroir gives it good aging potential, though dry Vouvrays generally mature faster than the sweeter styles from the appellation.
What food styles work best with dry Vouvray?
Dry Vouvray excels with Loire Valley goat's cheeses, river fish, and pork dishes. Its bright acidity and mineral backbone make it excellent with shellfish, particularly oysters and mussels. The wine's elegance also suits lighter poultry dishes and herb-driven cuisine.
Is this wine suitable for cellaring?
While this 2022 can be cellared for 3-4 years, dry Vouvray is generally made to be enjoyed within its first decade. The wine will develop honeyed complexity with time but won't dramatically transform like the sweeter moelleux styles from the region.
What temperature should I serve this at?
Serve at 8-10°C, well-chilled but not ice-cold. Too cold and you'll miss the subtle aromatics and mineral complexity that make Vouvray special. Allow it to warm slightly in the glass to fully appreciate its character.
