Barolo and Barbaresco tend to steal the headlines in Piedmont, but look beyond and you can find estates producing wines of the highest order.
Villa Sparina was founded by the Moccagatta family in the 1970's in the hamlet of Monterotondo. It comprises of 100 hectares of land, 70 of which are cultivated with local grapes for the production of Gavi and Barbera wine.
Montej, named after the locality, is the baby brother of the Monferrato Barbera, coming from fourteen-year-old vines, with a little Merlot added for extra juiciness. Full of dark cherry, fresh raspberries and ripe black fruits, this beautifully balanced wine even comes in a stylish amphorae shaped bottle which will stand out on any dinner table.
Villa Sparina's dedication to quality has not gone unnoticed, as they have received numerous accolades, including the prestigious "European Winery of the Year" award at the Wine Star Awards by Wine Enthusiast. This is an estate that should be on everyone’s radar.
