Peter Barlow represents the pinnacle of Rustenberg's winemaking, sourced exclusively from a single 2.5-hectare vineyard planted in 1974 on the steep south-facing slopes of the Simonsberg. This Cabernet Sauvignon is named after the farm's legendary cellarmaster who guided Rustenberg through its renaissance from the 1980s onwards.
The 2022 vintage delivers the wine's signature combination of power and elegance, with concentrated dark fruit character balanced by distinctive graphite minerality from the decomposed granite soils. Built for the long term, this wine rewards cellaring from 2028 until 2042, developing secondary complexity whilst retaining its structured backbone.
The 2022 Peter Barlow will remain quite structured and primary until around 2028, when the tannins begin to integrate and secondary complexity starts emerging. From 2030-2038, the wine should reach its optimal drinking window, developing cedar, tobacco and leather characteristics whilst retaining its core fruit concentration. The wine's excellent acidity and tannin structure suggest it will age gracefully until 2042, though it may begin a slow decline after its peak period. Exceptional storage conditions could extend its life further.
Tasting Notes
AppearanceDeep garnet with purple rim, displaying excellent concentration and youth.
NoseIntense blackcurrant and cassis dominate, supported by cedar, tobacco leaf and pencil shavings. Subtle violet florals emerge with aeration, alongside dark chocolate and exotic spice. The aromatics show remarkable purity and focus, indicating exceptional vineyard fruit.
PalateFull-bodied with impressive structure, the wine delivers concentrated dark berry fruit wrapped in firm but polished tannins. Graphite minerality provides backbone, whilst integrated oak adds cedar and vanilla complexity. The acidity is fresh and well-balanced, supporting the wine's considerable length and intensity.
FinishLong and persistent with dark fruit, cedar and mineral elements lingering beautifully.
Overall impressionA serious, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that exemplifies Stellenbosch's potential for world-class wine production.
Food Pairings
In the Western Cape, this style of Cabernet Sauvignon traditionally accompanies the local braai culture, particularly with grilled springbok, kudu or ostrich steaks seasoned with indigenous fynbos herbs. The wine pairs excellently with bobotie, South Africa's national dish of spiced mince topped with egg custard, where the wine's structure complements the aromatic spices. Local lamb from the Karoo, slow-roasted with rosemary and served with roasted root vegetables, creates another classic pairing. The wine also suits waterblommetjie bredie, a traditional stew that benefits from the Cabernet's robust character.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve at 16-18°C in large Bordeaux glasses to allow the wine's aromatics to develop fully. Decant 2-3 hours before serving to soften the firm tannins and allow the wine to open up. Young bottles particularly benefit from extended aeration. Store on its side in a cool, dark cellar at consistent temperature.
The Peter Barlow vineyard sits at 450 metres elevation on the steep south-facing slopes of the Simonsberg mountain. The soils are deep, well-drained decomposed granite with excellent water retention, forcing the vines to root deeply. The high altitude and southern exposure provide natural cooling, extending the ripening season and preserving acidity whilst developing intense flavour concentration. These challenging conditions produce naturally low yields of exceptional quality fruit.
Stellenbosch is South Africa's most prestigious wine region, known particularly for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends. The ward encompasses diverse terroir from cool mountain slopes to warmer valley floors, with the finest sites like Simonsberg producing age-worthy wines of international calibre. Stellenbosch's Mediterranean climate and granite-based soils create ideal conditions for premium red wine production, establishing it as the country's equivalent to Napa Valley or Bordeaux's Left Bank.
The 2022 growing season in Stellenbosch unfolded with characteristic variability, demanding careful vineyard management from producers. Winter rainfall proved adequate, replenishing soil moisture after several challenging dry years, though spring brought the usual concerns about wind damage in exposed sites. The summer months required judicious irrigation management, with temperatures remaining largely within optimal ranges. Harvest timing became crucial as producers balanced phenolic ripeness with natural acidity, particularly for the region's flagship Cabernet Sauvignon plantings on the mountain slopes and valley floors.
The vintage has produced wines of solid quality rather than exceptional character, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot showing good concentration and structure. Chenin Blanc performed reliably across different elevations, maintaining the bright acidity that defines Stellenbosch expressions of this variety. While 2022 may not achieve the acclaim of standout years, the wines display honest varietal character and proper balance. Most reds will benefit from three to five years of cellaring to integrate their tannins fully, whilst the whites are drinking well now with potential to develop complexity over the next two to three years.
FAQs
How does Peter Barlow compare to other premium South African Cabernet Sauvignons?
Peter Barlow is considered one of South Africa's finest single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, consistently ranking alongside Klein Constantia Estate and Kanonkop Paul Sauer. Its mountain vineyard origin and single-site focus distinguish it from many blended premium wines in the region.
Why is this wine named Peter Barlow?
Peter Barlow was Rustenberg's legendary cellarmaster from 1987-2009 who transformed the estate into a premium producer. The wine honours his contribution to South African winemaking and represents the pinnacle of quality he established at the property.
What makes the vineyard site so special?
The 2.5-hectare vineyard planted in 1974 sits on steep south-facing Simonsberg slopes at 450m elevation. The combination of decomposed granite soils, high altitude cooling and natural low yields creates ideal conditions for premium Cabernet Sauvignon production.
How long can this vintage be cellared?
The 2022 vintage has excellent aging potential until 2042, with optimal drinking from 2030-2038. The wine's firm tannin structure and balanced acidity provide the foundation for long-term development of secondary complexity.
Is this wine ready to drink now?
While approachable, the 2022 is quite structured and will benefit significantly from cellaring until 2028. Extended decanting can help soften the tannins if drinking younger, but patience will be rewarded with greater complexity.
How does this vintage compare to previous Peter Barlow releases?
The 2022 shows the wine's characteristic power and elegance, with excellent concentration typical of this cooler vintage. It displays more structured tannins than some warmer years, suggesting particularly strong aging potential.
